Today, we continue our discussions of where birds get food in winter by making bird feeders. We will use toilet paper tubes, soy butter and bird seed. Hopefully, we will get to see lots of beautiful song birds nibbling away at our feeders in our learning yard.

Winter Adventure Time
What an amazing day to go outside. With the right clothing, a day like today is glorious. Remember, layers are what creates warmth - long sleeve shirt, sweater, jacket, snow pants, warm socks, winter boots, hat, mittens and a scarf. Mittens are almost always warmer than gloves. And don't forget to dress the adults as warmly as the children so you can all enjoy outdoor time together. Investing in snow pants for yourself will change how you feel about winter.

Our Challenge this Week
This week, the students who visit room 101 will be investigating how birds find food in the winter. We are writing down our ideas, observing the birds outside and puzzling over materials we will use for an activity later in the week (we are making bird feeders out of recycled materials).
Let's hope, by weeks end, we all will have discovered how winter birds find food.

Some Outdoor Weekend Fun
Evergreen Brick Works Scavenger Hunt
Next date: December 17, 2015 | All day
Look up! Look down! Look inside! Look outside!
Explore Evergreen Brick Works in search of different things to discover about the site, it's history and the Don Valley where it's located. You'll leave with a better sense of what this wonderful place is all about.
Kids and adults will enjoy doing this scavenger hunt together. We've got two different versions: one if you've got children aged 3-6 and the other for children aged 7-10.
Pick up the Evergreen Brick Works scavenger hunt at the Welcome Desk inside the Young Welcome Centre. It's available every day that we're open.
It's free to do, but we suggest a donation of $2-$5 which helps make family-friendly activities here at Evergreen Brick Works accessible to all who visit.
Location
Evergreen Brick Works | 550 Bayview Ave, Toronto ON, M4W 3X8

The Mighty Cedar
Cedar trees are amazing things. For 100s of years they have been used to make everything from canoes to clothing. Cedar is one of the four medicines for indigenous Canadians. They are a feast for all our senses, right now room 101 smells as it looks, filled with cedar. In our cedar "forest" in the park next to school, the cedars are home to a squirrel who has built a nest in them.
As we focus on cedar trees this week, we are developing an appreciation for all that tress provide, from oxygen to furniture.
Ask your child to introduce you to a cedar tree.
